La Chira Wastewater Treatment Plant, Lima, Perú

Challenge:

The wastewater of six districts in the city of Lima was being disposed directly into the sea without previous treatment because there was no wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in that area of the city.

That resulted in the pollution of the sea waters, spread of diseases, public health problems, destruction of ecosystem, and limiting the potential of beaches as source of economic activity (fishing and tourism).

Solution:

Having started the project as a private initiative, the Ministry of Housing, Construction and Sanitation of Peru awarded the contract of designing, financing, constructing, operating & managing La Chira Wastewater Treatment Plant to a private consortium.

La Chira WWTP has an average water treatment capacity of 6.3 m3/sec. with a maximum of 11,3 m3/sec.

The new WWTP allowed to solve public health and environmental problems resulting from brown waters, improving human well-being and fostering economic growth.

 

SDG Impact:

SDG 3:   Improvement on human health and well-being. The functioning of the new La Chira WWTP stopped the disposal of brown waters into the sea, with direct positive impact on human health particularly of those living in the sea shore.

SDG 6:   Clean water and sanitation is guaranteed by the treatment of wastewater before being disposed into the sea.

SDG 8: Decent work and economic growth derived from the temporary and permanent jobs created by the infrastructure. The project improves productivity resulting from a decrease in the water transmitted infectious diseases, and therefor job absences. Additionally, the recovery of the beaches and seawater improves the economic activity in the fishing and tourism industry.

SDG 11: Sustainable cities and communities. The city of Lima has currently an adequate wastewater treatment infrastructure.

SDG 14: Life below water and ecosystems are better protected thanks to stopping the disposal of polluted water into the sea.

SDG 15: Life on land. Beaches, source of income for the tourist industry, is now clean and do not pose a risk for people using it.

SDG 17: La Chira WWTP has benefited from the expertise, know-how, and technology of the private sector.
